Iron doped periodically poled lithium niobate features good photorefractive response at
high spatial frequencies while its responce at low spatial frequencies is strongly reduced.
This ensures high efficient recording of 3D holograms in the bulk crystals with virtually
no optical damage from the unfocuced laser beams. Our recent studies showed that
apart from suppression of optical damage PPLN has at least one more advantage which
is important for storage and reconstruction of high quality images: the intermodulation
noise in hologram recording is strongly reduced, too. The compareson of single and
multiple hologram recording in PPLN and in homogeneously poled crystal of the same
composition will be presented.
